British Values

Promoting British Values at Cheswick Green Primary School

At Cheswick Green Primary School, we are proud to be an inclusive school where every child is valued, respected and supported to achieve their full potential. We celebrate the diversity of our school community and ensure that all pupils feel safe, welcomed and able to thrive, regardless of their background, abilities, beliefs or individual needs. Through our curriculum, assemblies, pupil leadership opportunities and daily interactions, we actively promote the British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. These values help our pupils develop into confident, responsible and respectful citizens who are prepared to make a positive contribution to modern Britain and the wider world.

Below are some examples of how these British Values are applied within our school:

Democracy

Each year, the children create their class rules and the rights associated with these.

We have a School Council & Eco team consisting of children throughout the school. Each member of this group is democratically elected by their peers in their class. Meetings are held each half term and the children have led on school projects e.g. during 2025-26, the School Council raised funds for friendship benches for each playground.

Each class has Reading Champions, who are democratically elected by their peers.

Pupil voice is very important at Cheswick Green and the children have regular opportunities to put forward their views about school e.g. with subject leaders doing pupil voice opportunities.

The Rule of Law

The importance of laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the school or the country, are consistently reinforced at Cheswick Green Primary School.

Pupils are taught from Pre-School the rules of the school. Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind rules and laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken. Our CHESWICK Way values are used to consolidate this value and visits from authorities such as the police and fire service help reinforce this message.

Individual Liberty

At Cheswick Green Primary School, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school, we educate and provide boundaries for young pupils to make informed choices, through a safe environment and an empowering education. Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advised how to exercise these safely, for example through our eSafety and PSHE lessons. One of our CHESWICK Way values is Safe, which covers a variety of areas and situations.

Mutual Respect

Mutual respect is at the heart of our values. Through our relational behaviour policy, our children learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights and those of others. All members of our school community treat each other with respect.

Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

We actively promote diversity through our celebrations of different faiths and cultures. Our assemblies, Religious Education & PSHE lessons reinforce messages of tolerance and respect for others.

Members of different faiths and religions are encouraged to share their knowledge to enhance learning both within school and on trips to places of worship. Our children study and learn about places of worship that are important to different faiths.
