Instrument of Government
Our New, Reconstituted Governing Body
In May 2014 the Department for Education (DfE) issued new statutory guidance on the constitution of governing bodies of maintained schools. It stated that by 1st September 2015 all governing bodies must be constituted under the School Governance (Constitution) (England) Regulations 2012.
As part of the exercise necessary to implement this requirement the Governors at Cheswick Green took the opportunity to take stock of whether or not the size, structure and membership of the existing Governing Body was fit for purpose to deliver its core functions and other duties.
It was concluded that the Board was working well despite there being vacancies for two Parent Governors and one Community Governor. It was therefore agreed that there was no need for any radical change from the present state.
However, the new regulations stipulate that:
- The number of Local Authority Governors be reduced from three to one
- The number of staff governors be reduced from three to one plus the Headteacher
- The number of Parent Governors to be at least two
- The category of Community Governor be deleted and a new category of Co-opted Governor be created.
In order to comply with these requirements it was decided to recommend to the Local Authority that the reconstituted Governing Body for Cheswick Green Primary School should comprise:
- The Headteacher
- One Staff Governor
- One Local Authority Governor
- Two Parent Governors
- Seven Co-opted Governors
That recommendation was formally approved at a Local Authority Cabinet Decision Session on the 16th March and it became effective on 1st April.
There has been no change in the membership of the governing body although seven governors have changed category.
